So as I sit at my cubicle, I begin to wonder how in the world do I not gain weight at work. Why? Because there is a guy here that makes delicious fudge, from scratch about every other week. Vending Machines. Take out. Lunch meetings. Recently, as of yesterday, I joined a gym. And this isn’t any New Year’s resolution either that will fade, like I am going to lose 50 lbs by next month goal type of thing. It’s more of a, I just want to be healthy while I am in the corporate world type thing. Anyways, after doing some research I have complied what I think would be the best way for me and you to stay on track with being healthy even in the workplace. Most of it is common sense, but it will be a reminder and motivator.
- Sleep. More energy with a more regular sleep pattern. Plus tiredness can negatively affect your work that you complete.
- Drink more. But stay away from sodas. We all know this, but it’s so easy to start the day off right with a Mountain Dew, as my supervisor does. But try grabbing water, juice or those small packets you can put into water such as lemonade. While I was in Germany, everyone always had something to drink throughout the day. They thought I was weird that I didn’t have to have something all the time, but I got used to it and now it’s routine. Now I am not trying to tell you to drink 13 cups coffee like they did (only slightly exaggerated), but to have some liquid go through you. I read somewhere that we typically confuse thirst with hunger. Plus, it keeps everything else moving and inline. Don’t let me go off on the benefits of drinking enough water. Plus getting up to refill creates more movement and face to face interaction.
- Pack snacks. Don’t fall into the vending machine trap. It can add up, in calories and money! Although there are some items in the machines that would be ok to eat, I think it would be better to keep healthier options on hand. OH! Be careful about candy jars at your coworker’s desk. A little here and there won’t hurt, but don’t make a habit of snatching out of the candy jar. I have almonds in my desk for that after breakfast craving.
- Speaking of breakfast. EAT IT! Don’t skip this. We have been told this since we were knee high, but it is essential to curbing those cravings. Plus it gives you the boost you need for the remainder of the morning. It never has to be anything extravagant because believe me, I never have enough time to whip a feast in the morning. A simple cereal, fruit and juice, even oatmeal or a smoothie would be fine.
- Take out. Check out this link for healthy options for takeout meals. I personally like to pack a lunch just because its budget and waistline friendly. If your office has a fridge and/or a microwave take advantage of it. Make one more serving of your healthy dinner to have the leftovers. In addition, be careful of the menus at a restaurant during lunch meetings. Even if you order a salad, be mindful of the dressing or a sandwich and the magnitude of carbs that come along with it.
- Take a break or walk. I know in the winter everyone dreams of the closest spot in the parking lot, but as the weather warms up try and park further away, at work or at the grocery, to allow your body some movement. Also, don’t be afraid to actually go to an associate instead of calling or emailing. Oh yeah, and use the stairs at every opportunity (unless you are like on the 54th floor…). A little bit of movement keeps your blood flowing and moving.
- Find time, before, after during lunch or on the weekends to join a club or center or to work out. Try at least 2 times a week, and I bet you will be adding more…
