Not Every Industry Is Hurting

I encourage everyone who is job hunting in this tough economic time to really study the economy. Everyone sees this downturn as every company and industry is hurting. That is quite untrue for many industries and not every area is affected equally during these times. There is a sales technique I use for those that have a tough time selling in an economy where budgets, people, and space are cut from companies removing the desire to buy new things.  In my business I have to sell to people that new technology will help their company to keep growing but I also understand that if there’s no money to be spent, I can’t force it. So I often look for industries that aren’t hurting. You can all think of one major industry that’s not hurting real bad right? It’s one we love to hate. It’s in the front of your mind… and your vehicles. OIL companies! They aren’t slowing down.

In that same regard, think about how most commercials you are seeing recently have companies talking about ‘going green.’ It’s the hottest buzz word at just about every firm, government branch and consumers are thinking heavily about it. So, go after those companies trying to harness solar energy or finding ways to recycle products. Those companies are going to get funding from government, investors will pour money into them and they will only grow over the next few years. Remember, it’s not always about finding the biggest, baddest job right now. Sometimes you can get in early to companies that will grow leaps and bounds. It’s way cooler to be part of that and you’ll know all of the top management for when it blows up big and they’ll remember you. Imagine the small group of people who started Google and got in early. Ah, how great it would be to go back in time with Doc Brown, right?

Finding companies that are doing well is all a matter of research which will be a theme of every post you read on here. Do your research! Luckily reading Career Fire is research, so good work! Here’s a link to an article about 3 categories of companies that aren’t hurting by Daniel Altman. So a few things to remember:

  • Know what’s going on in the economy and who is/is not affected. Read a newspaper!
  • Find who’s going “Green” and what industries support those companies
  • Read this article by Daniel Altman
  • Have a positive attitude that your skills are above the hurting economy

What’s you’re strategy for finding those companies that are growing?
