After the interview process it can be difficult for a potential employee to negotiate a salary, especially if they really need the job! Nobody wants to ask for too much and miss the job opportunity or ask for too little and sell themselves short. The following tips will help you negotiate a salary easily and to your liking.
Tip #1 Research Average Salary
THE first thing you need to do is research the average salary for the position you are applying for. There are many websites that allow you to search the title of the job as well as the city to get the average salary for that position in that city. This is a great tool so you know what average salaries are and what you could be making. This will give you some leverage.
Tip #2 Review Salary Range
Many companies include a salary range in their employment ad. If so, review this salary range and see how it compares to average salaries and to your past income. Always ask for more than you were making in your previous job, but within the salary range. If you have significant experience and skills you are bringing to the table then ask for the top end. If not, go mid to low. If you don’t know the salary range ask what it is before you respond to how much salary you require so you don’t go over or under.
Tip #3 Include Benefits and Perks
Remember when negotiating salary you should discuss benefits and perks. These are really part of your income and deserve your attention. Consider exchanging some benefits for more pay or else reducing your salary for options like telecommuting or a flexible work schedule.
